DESCRIPTION OF ITINERARY:
DAY 01: AREQUIPA – CHIVAY – COLCA CANYON – SIBAYO VILLAGE: Early morning around 3:30am a guide and driver will pick you up from the hotel to take you to Colca Canyon, which is located 165km away from Arequipa and 42km from Chivay town, on the way we will ascend up to 4910 meters, place called Patapampa, from there you can clearly see the Grand Canyon of the Colca, the snowcapped volcano Misti (Arequipa). According to the Andean custom, formerly travelers crossed mountains and left in their way on the highest part of the road (apachetas) small stones making a wish and leaving all the fatigue in these stones, for this reason that there are on this place (Patapampa) many piles of rocks left by the travelers. Then we descend to Chivay, a small village on the river of the Colca Valley. We arrive to the village of Chivay approximately at 06:30 am. Breakfast at local restaurant at Chivay village. After breakfast we continue to the viewpoint cross of Condor to appreciate the majestic flight of the condor. The condor world’s largest bird can fly up to 7000 m of height and live up to 85 years approximately. In Inca times the condor was considered a very special divinity because linked the hanan pacha (mundo de arriba) with kay pacha (mundo donde vivimos). There is a clear hierarchy at lunch time, because the adult males will eat first, then adult females and finally young condors, usually the condor are a scavenger (feeding on large mammals). Usually you can see the condor in the morning, at which time they go out of their caves to hunt mammals. The Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world, which was studied and measured in 2005 by the Polish Andrew Pietowski over 4160m (north side) and 3600m (south side), located in the district of Huambo. The origin of the Colca Canyon is tectonic and formed 150 million years ago. Returning to Chivay on route we will observe the Inca terraces along Colca canyon, likewise some villages as Achoma and Yanque. Arrival in Chivay village around 12:30 for lunch. Afternoon at leisure for hotsprings (optional). Then we continue to Sibayo village taking the unpaved road, passing on the way the local villages of Canocota, Tuti. Arrival in Sibayo village (Chivay-Sibayo 35km). Dinner-menu included. Overnight at rural cottage in Sibayo village.
DAY 02: SIBAYO – TISCO – CHOQOLAQA FOREST ROCK – TISCO – CHIVAY – AREQUIPA: Breakfast included. Early morning around 6:30am a guide and driver will pick you up from guest house to take you to Tisco village, a car trip of 1.30 hours, located at marker 47km. In Tisco village live 1850 inhabitants and the main activity is livestock. Then a guide and driver will take you to the forest rock of Choqolaqa (Tisco-Choqolaqa 46km) by unpaved road, a car trip of 2 hours, the road is dusty between april-november, and muddy in the rainy season between dicember-march. Then hiking to forest rock, at beggining is uphill, where the top is located at 4800m. We will see lot of alpacas and llamas grazing during our walking. Arrival in Choqolaqa, also called by locals as the petrified city fo Arequipa, this place is spectacular because the nature carved different types of figures as women and angels. Also animals as seals, elephants, condors, besides castles, towers and much more. Then box-lunch included during the trip. We go back to Tisco around 13:00pm, then we continue for our next destination which is Arequipa, a car trip of 6:30 hours (Choqolaqa-Chivay-Arequipa 287km). Arrival in Arequipa, then transfer to hotel. Overnight in Arequipa.
